We Are Family Homecoming - an Event to Remember

by By Shannon Henderson

Blessings were all around us on the evening of Friday, November 12, at the We Are Family 25th Anniversary Homecoming, celebrated at Christ the King Church and the grounds of L’Arche Harbor House. On this beautiful, cool fall evening, hundreds of friends –including many from the early days of the community and others who traveled from out of town – came together to pay tribute, reminisce and marvel at the miracle that is LHH. The event was also a chance to pay tribute to Bishop John J. Snyder, a man who has been our mentor from the start.

The evening began with a welcome by Community Leader Amy Finn-Schultz and Board President Cheryl O’Connor and congratulatory remarks by Jo Anne Horstmann, our L’Arche USA Regional Coordinator. Next, Bishop Snyder was honored in a special presentation that summarized the history of the community and recapped his involvement. The program concluded with A Day in the Life of L’Arche, a mime skit starring our talented L’Arche Harbor House Players and Chalk Artists from the Rainbow Workshop. Touching, funny and spirited, the skit celebrated the many gifts of sharing life in community. Its finale was a virtuoso performance of Sly and the Family Stone’s We Are Family by core member Katrina – after which the audience followed a luminaria-lit path to dinner under the stars in the courtyard of L’Arche Harbor House.

The gala capped a series of smaller celebrations of the community’s 25-year journey. Months of planning preceded the November 12 event. “This was an unprecedented coming-together of every group that cares about L’Arche Harbor House, from our auxiliary to the board to staff, and of course core members and assistants,” says Community Leader Amy Finn-Schultz. “And none of it would have been possible without the support of attendees. Many who couldn’t join us sent their love in the form of donations. It was just magical moment.”
